Hi, I’m Kelsey! This is Post 2 in my ongoing series about building Artistic Hair Salon into the most inclusive salon in Orange County. If you missed Post 1, start here. Otherwise, read on.

I want to tell you something that most salon owners won’t say out loud.
The salon I took over wasn’t thriving. It wasn’t a gem waiting to be polished. It was a shell. Thirty-plus years of history, yes… but history doesn’t pay the bills, and history doesn’t build a culture. What I walked into had good bones and not much else.
And I said yes anyway.
Not because I was naive. Not because I didn’t see the work ahead. I said yes because I saw something more important than what was there. I saw what I could create. And once I saw it, I couldn’t unsee it.
That vision has required relentlessness. It still does. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The Shell I Walked Into (And the Vision I Brought With Me)
When I created Artistic Hair Salon, what I took over wasn’t a turnkey operation. I was handed a space with a lot of potential that had never been fully realized.
The previous version of this salon had been running for over thirty years. That sounds impressive until you look closer. The culture had calcified. The systems were outdated. The vision, if there ever was one, had long since faded.
I couldn’t rebuild it from within because the foundation had inherent flaws. So I didn’t try to rebuild it. I used the shell and built something entirely new inside it.
That’s a different thing entirely.
Rebuilding means working with what’s there. Building new means starting from your own vision and letting the space serve that vision, not the other way around. I chose the second path. And the first question I asked myself was: what does Orange County actually need that it doesn’t have?
The answer came quickly: a truly inclusive salon in Orange County. Not inclusive as a marketing word. Inclusive as a lived reality.
What “Inclusive Salon in Orange County” Actually Means
Let me be specific, because this word gets thrown around a lot and it deserves more than that.
When I say Artistic Hair Salon is the inclusive salon in Orange County, I mean that every single person who walks through our door is welcome. Not tolerated. Not accommodated. Genuinely, warmly, skillfully welcomed.
That means every hair type. Straight, wavy, curly, coily, textured, color-treated, natural, transitioning. Every single one. We don’t have a “we don’t really do that here” hair type. We do all of it, and we do it well.
It means every background. Orange County is one of the most diverse places in California, and our salon reflects that. Latino clients, Asian clients, Black clients, mixed-race clients, clients who have never found a stylist who truly understood their hair. They belong here.
It means every identity. You can be fully yourself at Artistic, and so can your clients. We are a safe space in the truest sense of that phrase, not because we put a sticker in the window, but because we build it into everything we do.
And it means every stylist who shares that vision. If you want to build a business serving all of Orange County, not just a comfortable slice of it, you belong here too.
That’s what an inclusive salon in Orange County looks like in practice. That’s what I’m building.
The 3 Pillars of What I’m Creating
Building a genuinely inclusive salon in Orange County from a crumbling shell doesn’t happen by accident. It happens by design. Here are the three pillars I’ve been building on from day one.
1. Culture First, Everything Else Second
The single biggest mistake I see in salons is treating culture as an afterthought. You hire people, fill chairs, and hope the vibe works out. It never does.
I started with culture. What kind of people do I want working here? What kind of energy do I want clients to walk into? What are the non-negotiables?
The answers: business-minded stylists who want to build something real. Energy that is warm, professional, and alive. Non-negotiables: respect, openness, and a genuine love for the craft.
Everything else, the amenities, the pricing, the systems, flows from that foundation. That’s the cultural foundation of the inclusive salon in Orange County I’m building.
2. Real Support for Independent Stylists
One of the things I couldn’t find when I was looking at salon chair rental options in Orange County was a place that offered genuine support without taking away your independence.
Most salons do one or the other. Either they control everything and call it “support,” or they hand you a chair and leave you completely alone. Neither works for a stylist who is serious about building a business.
At Artistic, we actively promote our stylists on social media. We provide towel service, a full Redken color bar, and a personal locker. We create an environment where you can focus entirely on your clients and your craft. And we do all of that while you run your own business, your own way, on your own terms.
That’s what salon chair rental at an inclusive salon in Orange County should look like. Independence with a safety net, not isolation with a weekly bill.
3. A Space That Serves the Vision
I mentioned that I used the shell of the old salon to build something new. Part of building a truly inclusive salon in Orange County means being willing to make bold decisions about space and environment when the vision required it.
I’m not precious about square footage or history. I’m precious about whether the space serves the stylists and clients who walk into it. When it does, everything works. When it doesn’t, something has to change.
That willingness to prioritize vision over comfort is part of what makes Artistic different. We’re not maintaining something. We’re building something. And that distinction matters enormously for the stylists who rent chairs here. That’s what makes Artistic the inclusive salon in Orange County worth joining.
Why the Right Stylists Are the Final Piece
Here’s the truth about building an inclusive salon in Orange County: the owner can only do so much.
The culture I’m building lives in the stylists who show up every day. It lives in the way they treat their clients, the way they treat each other, and the way they approach their craft. I can create the environment, but the stylists bring it to life.
That’s why I’m not just looking for anyone to fill a chair. I’m looking for stylists who share this vision. Experienced professionals, two or more years in, who want to build their own business inside a salon that genuinely supports them. Stylists who are excited about serving a diverse, multicultural clientele. Stylists who want independence without isolation.
If that’s you, you’re not just renting a chair. You’re becoming part of something that’s being built with intention. That’s the kind of inclusive salon in Orange County that I’m building, one right person at a time.
Salon chair rental in Orange County is available at Artistic right now, at $125 per week. That includes towel service, full Redken color bar access, a personal locker, and active social media promotion for your work.
But more than the rate, you’d be joining the most inclusive salon in Orange County. And that’s worth something that doesn’t show up on a price sheet.
What’s Coming Next
Next week I’m sharing the part of this story that most salon owners skip entirely: the fear. The moment I almost didn’t take the leap, and why you might be feeling the same hesitation right now.
And if you read Post 1 and missed it, start the journey from the beginning here.
